press release provided by March of Dimes
Local March of Dimes Ambassadors Personify from “Polio to Prematurity”
Frank Reed and the Bittner family to speak at March for Babies on Sunday, May 4th in Danbury
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 28, 2014
CONTACT: Leigh-Anne Lefurge 860-815-9353 [email protected] @marchofdimesct
(Danbury, CT) -- Frank Reed of Danbury, a polio survivor and March of Dimes poster child in 1945, will represent the March of Dimes as the 75th Anniversary Ambassador at the Danbury March for Babies walk on Sunday, May 4th. Reed will represent survivors of polio and the March of Dimes efforts in the historical fight against the dreaded disease.
In 1938, the March of Dimes was founded by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in an effort to find a cure for what was then known as “the crippler.” Success came in the form of a vaccine in 1955, and there has not been a single outbreak of polio in the United States in more than 30 years.
For the March of Dimes, the polio vaccine was only the beginning, and today the organization leads the fight against premature birth and birth defects. Prematurity, the number one killer of newborns in the U.S., affect one in 10 babies in Connecticut.
Jessica and Joseph Bittner of New Milford, along with their daughters Haley and Briella, will also walk on Sunday in Danbury as March for Babies Ambassadors. They will share the twins’ prematurity journey, and thank walkers for their commitment to the March of Dimes mission to give all babies a healthy start.
Jessica was experiencing some health difficulties during her pregnancy, and eight weeks before her due date the twins were born weighing 3 pounds, and 3 pounds 12 ounces. Both girls required feeding tubes and had bilirubin light therapy to help with jaundice. Briella also a hole in her lung and required CPAP breathing therapy. They ultimately spent 6 and 6 ½ weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Danbury Hospital.
“I believe it is important to share our journey with other families, to show that there is hope. We were so fortunate to have a positive outcome. We hope that more people get involved and realize the importance of helping these babies and families, and that more research can get funded so that more babies can have a healthy start,” said Jessica.
Local residents can support the efforts of the March of Dimes by participating in March for Babies with Reed and the Bittner family this Sunday at Ives Concert Park at Western Connecticut State University. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the walk kicking off at 10 a.m. To register visit marchforbabies.org/event/danbury.
Danbury March for Babies is sponsored locally by Scalzo Group Real Estate Services, Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT), Branson, Connex International, 98Q and WLAD 800AM (Berkshire Broadcasting), and is supported by statewide sponsors, NBC Connecticut and Comcast. March for Babies is sponsored nationally by the March of Dimes number one corporate supporter Kmart, Macy’s, Famous Footwear, Cigna, Sanofi Pasteur, Mission Pharmacal, Actavis, and United Airlines.
For more than 75 years, moms and babies have benefited from March of Dimes research, education, vaccines and breakthroughs.
